Doreen Ellis
As a founder member and Treasurer of the Dolphin Swimming Club at Bedwas she took a course of Bookkeeping at Treforest College, receiving an A-plus for her project and a recommendation for a University Place
In her professional life Doreen worked with 16-18 year old disadvantaged young people within a government sponsored scheme. This sought to make these young people feel worthwhile within the community by giving them duties such as helping elderly people working various crafts and catering. On the catering side she organised baking and simple meals which also involved teaching costing and pricing.
Following her retirement, she formed and organised the Caerphilly Branch of the Parkinson’s Society and was involved with various charitable and professional people, raising over £10,000 in donations and grants. She also became involved with the Carers’ Forum and attended Alzheimer’s Carers meetings. She has used this experience as Membership Secretary for the project
Doreen was born in the Caerphilly area. Her father and grandfather contributed as miners to the hospital. Her children and grandchildren were born there. She would like the Beeches to be retained for the benefit of the community and for future generations to know its history.
